Anyways, in my youth group years I attended a Church where we often fought against the legalism that can come with memorizing verses (not that there's anything wrong with a Bible Bowl, but our intentions are sometimes skewed), so I've never really grasped the value of the practice. But lately, it seems like everywhere I go people are encouraging memorizing Scripture. So I'm going to start. I encourage you to join me! I'm excited to see where it leads.

ReplyDeleteI just read about something on Beth Moore's blog where she is encouraging women to memorize 24 verses this year, and their notebook of verses is their ticket to a retreat in January of 2012! I know all kinds of verses from the King James Version, so I must have memorized them as a child. I do think it's harder when we are older, but guess it can't hurt to try exercising those memory muscles again!
ReplyDeleteHallie, I was the same way until this last summer. I have a dear and close friend that encouraged myself and many others to memorize scripture after she read a book called, "the Hiding Place," by Corrie Ten Boom. This is a story of a lady and her sister that had everything taken and stripped away from them when entering a concentration camp in WWII. The only thing they had left were the words of the Lord that they had hidden in their hearts. While I haven't read the book, it still encouraged me to memorize scripture even if it doesn't receive a grade or sticker on a chart. Good luck!
